Catelyn A - Disability Support Worker

Catelyn has Neurodivergent siblings, and can sign AUSLAN fluently.

What are your hobbies outside of working?

I love spending time with my family and friends, playing with my dogs, and going down to the beach. I am also an avid AFL fan and love watching games, at home and live at the stadiums. In my downtime, I love to listen to music, any kind will do, and doing puzzles like word searches and sudokus.

How do you connect with young people?

I find myself to be quite chatty, and it is rare for me to be at a
loss for words, so I like to try and find some kind of similarity
between myself and the young person to help them feel more
comfortable, that they can talk to me, and that I understand them. I want to treat them as if I’ve known them for years, but to also be patient with their own personal progress, as it is so rewarding in the long run.

What were you like growing up?

I was always very active growing up, always busy with different extracurricular activities. I played lots of netball, but I did sports like gymnastics, tennis, cricket, acrobatics, etc. I am 1 of 5 kids, so we always had a loud and busy household, so I find I am able to adapt in any kind of living circumstance. I also grew up with 2 of my older siblings being neurodivergent, but with both very different cases, which I find has helped me adapt to many kinds of neurodivergent people.
